Luke Story - Motor Trimming.
If you have any inquiries about restoring your car interiors, the best ways to go about it
and what sort of materials to use, I am more than happy to help. I can tell you which
suppliers have got what, and give you an idea of quantity and quality of materials, costs
and locations of suppliers.
As motor trimming is a very labour intensive trade, I often encourage restorers to get their
seats re-trimmed early in the restoration as to spread the costs. With all the information
on the internet, sourcing original materials for most older classics is now possible but usually
at a cost. As certain vehicles aren't worth as much as others, I've helped lots of people find
realistic solutions to tidy up their classics.
The use of leather has become more prevalent in later model cars so the costs of good
automotive leather has dropped in value to around $50 per metre plus GST making it more
affordable than before. Most hides vary between 4 and 6 metres, so depending on what
type of seats you have will determine how many hides you will need. For most leather, there
is usually a vinyl that is the same in colour for door trims and other sections.
If you go to the trouble of restoring your classic car, remember that the interior is where you
will be when your enjoying your classic and can also make a huge difference to its value when
you come to sell it. When it comes to originality, custom work, tidy ups and practical solutions
I can advise you of the most suitable options.
